I’m not much of a dairy farmer. In fact recently I haven’t even been much of an eater, let alone cooking anything that requires effort. When the opportunity arose to test a new easy yogurt-making product by some clever people in New Zealand at EasiYo, I was intrigued. Could someone as time strapped and impatient as me actually make yogurt? Ugh, turns out the answer is YES and the yogurt is AWESOME!
What’s really cool about this method of making yogurt is that it requires no cooking or cooking utensils! All you need is water, the powdered mixture, the EasiYo jar and yogurt maker which is essentially a thermos that surrounds the jar providing the perfect temperature to activate the yogurt. The ease of making this yogurt makes it the perfect kit to have on a boat, in a van or camping. Obviously it’s perfect in your kitchen too! Literally NO COOKING!
How to make your own yogurt with the EasiYo yogurt kit
All you need is the yogurt making kit (sachet of yogurt mix and the EasiYo yogurt maker and jar). You then just add water (room temperature) to one yogurt sachet and mix together in the jar by shaking it. Fill the yogurt maker will boiling water up to the water mark, and place the jar in the water. Pop the lid on, leave it for 8 hours and come back to find the mixture set. Now you have live yogurt full of billions of good bacteria, ready to eat! One sachet makes 1kg of fresh live yogurt that you can spoon out of the jar when ever you want (or add to recipes).
There are loads of different flavour yogurt sachets to chose from. My favourite was the classic strawberry flavour. I sprinkled this with blueberries, coconut, cacao and chia seeds – Yum!
Why is yogurt good for you?
Yogurt contains live bacteria known as a probiotic. Literally translated, probiotic means ‘for life’. It helps your gut by adjusting the microflora of the intestines helping with digestion and immune function. Only yogurts that state they contain live cultures such as EasiYo with Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus acidophilus, work in this way. Many health conscious people start their day with yogurt included in their breakfast or smoothie, to kick start their gut in the morning. You also get a dose of animal protein and other nutrients such as calcium, vitamin B-2, B-12, potassium and magnesium.

The EasiYo yogurt maker retails for pretty cheap too. The yogurt maker and jar will set you back about $22 and the individual yogurt sachets retail for under $5. That’s $5 for a kilo of your own homemade yogurt! Winning!
