Malia Manuel surfing Western Australia, filmed from a drone (Vimeo Staff Pick … i.e. a REALLY good surf video!).

In this surf video, film-maker Steven Briand worked with team O’Neill surfer and professional athlete Malia Manuel to capture a unique perspective on a single day’s surf session in Western Australia. Utilising drones for the majority of the videography, Steven plays with perspective, taking the viewer into, above, and beyond the waves.

Not doing what’s expected starts by having the most unreasonable expectations of yourself. This manifesto inspired O’Neill to commission six top filmmakers from around the world to re-imagine surfing through the lens of Unreasonable.

Steven Briand (France) can go from animation in stop motion to live action, or even to mixing techniques in order to create original visual worlds. “Making possible through the image what is not possible in reality” is the saying that conducts his work.

Check out director Steve Briand’s profile and his videos on his Vimeo channel.

Malia Manuel is a female professional surfer from Kauai, Hawaii currently competing on the World Surf League professional tour. She is sponsored by O’Neill.
