Providing a positive platform for women in a new all-female inspirational ski film by Lynsey Dyer.
Pretty Faces is a ski film featuring the best female athletes from around the world in celebration of playing outside, pushing the sport and living up to our fullest potential as a supportive community. Inspired by the desire to offer young girls role models and inspiration to play outside, this film aims to capture all the girl stoke from the pioneers who have paved the way to the “never-evers” who will continue to define what it means to ski like a girl.
“I wanted to give young girls something positive to look up to…I wanted to give them their Blizzard of Ahhs, Ski Movie or High Life, but done in a way that also shows the elegance, grace, community and style that is unique to women in the mountains,” – Lynsey Dyer
Created by Lynsey Dyer, professional skier and advocate of positive female representation in skiing at Unicorn Productions (ergh, epic name!). Lynsey’s motivations were to create a film targeted to women athletes while staying true to the soul and community that can be found in the mountains. She wanted to take a different point of view and inspire more women to get out there and conquer their biggest desires. Mountain life and skiing offers girls so many opportunities, not only in a physical sense but in a way that helps you grow as a woman: grow your confidence, your relationships and your passion for something bigger than yourself.
Sadly women are still massively under-represented in mainstream media, with just 14 percent of athletes in all major films being female (source: National Geographic). It is so refreshing to see Pretty Faces focus on strong, unapologetic women and fearless women. Telling the inspiring story of what life is like as a skier girl, within that supportive community that inspires progression and individuality.
“I ski with girls. Every year they come home from college idolizing some new pop star. The message I see them getting is: You’re only as good as you look or how sexualized you can be. Skiing has done so much for me, and it’s given me so many opportunities to see from a whole different perspective and experience powder snow, to value myself for more than the outside world has told me I am as far as boys’ attention or any of that popularity stuff. Consider that one out of three girls has an eating disorder. Skiing gave me an outlet to get away from all that. I want to be able to give that back so that we can empower the next generation to fulfill their ultimate potential.” – Lynsey Dyer on her motivations for making the film. With Pretty Faces, Lynsey created a platforms where women can call the shots and represent themselves in a way that is not guided by marketing dollars or twisted for male viewing pleasure. In an industry that still sees women athletes marketed to their male counterparts, Pretty Faces is the antithesis to this, showing young girls a world you want to be part of and a sport that is all encompassing, encouraging and supportive. Everything you will find as life as a skier girl.
“Essentially the only opportunity or exposure that girls have had in action sports films is how they might relate to or be marketed toward young dudes. Therefore you have to show up either as a dude in one of these films or you have to take your clothes off. The message is once again you’re only as valuable as you look regardless of your talent. So we want to create an alternative, where your talent and the connection you have to outdoors are what really matter.” – Lynsey Dyer in National Geographic interview.
Here are some great quotes from Pretty Faces. It is a film that is sure to inspire you get out there, push your boundaries, believe in yourself and explore the world around you:
“Life as a skier is about following a dream, wherever it leads.”
“Pretty Faces are everywhere. On billboards, in magazines and on television. Luring us in, telling us who to be, how to act and what to aspire to. The faces that we seek are similar. They lure us in, tell us who to be and make us who we are. The difference is, the pretty faces that we seek are above 5,000 feet.”
“We start each year with a plan. But life as a skier is about following a dream wherever it will lead.”
“The best things in life are the ones you work the hardest for.”
“Conquer fear that’s why you’re here. Conquer fear that’s why you’re here”
“We need more powerful women in this World that will take the bull by the horn and say ‘this is what we do, come and join us”
“If your dream is skiing then you have to pursue it relentlessly, wherever you are.”
“It look skiing with other women for me to push myself”
