Tarnea O’Meara is a professional surfer from the Sunshine Coast, Australia. She is currently competing on the World Qualifying Series (WQS) for a spot on the Championship Tour (CT).
After the WQS event in El Salvador, Tarnea and I along with fellow surfers Codie Klein and Stephanie Single, headed south to enjoy more of El Salvador’s incredible surfing spots. I had the absolute pleasure of traveling with Tarnea and her dad Howard, the co-owner of Australian health food brand Changing Habits. The dad and daughter duo were a wealth of knowledge about health and nutrition, something Still Stoked has interviewed Tarnea before on before.

20 questions with pro surfer Tarnea O’Meara
#1 What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Go with the intention of winning and not with the expectation of winning.
So if you go in to something with the intention to win rather then the expectation, it is less pressure on yourself. Nam Balwin, my breath enhancement coach taught me that.
#2 Do you have a morning routine?
Wake up and wash my face. Don’t leave the kitchen until I’ve drunk two glasses of water. Do a coconut oil pull – gargle with coconut oil in my mouth for at least 15mins on my way to the surf!
#3 Surf bikinis – what is your preferred style?
I’ve been surfing in a few Gypsea bikinis and these are good. Loving the crop-top styles.
#4 What is your favourite surf spot in the whole world?
I love Noosa Tee Tree in Australia.
#5 Do you have any pre-surf rituals?
I hop on one foot and then the other. It gets my fast twitch motors in my body going.
Then I sit and watch the surf before paddling out.
#6 What are your thoughts on Kelly Slater’s wave pool?
Frigging sick! Get me into that ASAP. It’s the most perfect thing I’ve ever seen, like (makes sucking barreling noise!).
#7 What does your training look like, off season vs. on season?
I have the same routine all year round. It only changes if I go away on a comp.
#8 What is your favourite post morning surf snack?
I have a Bulletproof coffee and a massive vegetable stir-fry with avocado and sourcrout.
#9 Who is your best friend on tour?
Codie Klein. I travel to most places with her. She showed me the ropes and eats similar things to me so it’s easy.
#10 Do you have a bad habit that you are working on with your surfing?
I’m working on opening up my shoulders more when I carve.
#11 What are your must-have items on a long haul flight?
Trackies, hoodie, compression socks. I usually take all my meals, face serum (28 skincare oils is the brand), lavender oil, breathe (another oil), headphones, my computer, a litre and a half of water. Tooth brush, tooth paste. Snacks: caco-melts, chopped up veggies, seed mix.
#12 Do you think surfing should be in the Olympics?
Yes but only if it is staged in a very controlled environment such as a wave pool.
A medal going towards your country is a huge thing that I’d love to be part of.
#13 Who is you idol in and outside of surfing?
Stephanie Gilmore – I just watch her surfing and it’s just the way I wanna surf. The speed, power and the grace.
My mum – She really stands up for what she believes in.
#14 Do you have a pump-up song before paddling out?
I like a bit of M83.
#15 What is your most prized possession?
I value my car as without my car I can’t get anywhere! It is my freedom. I drive a Mazda 3.
#16 What is your favourite recipe to make?
I make my own granola with fig and cinnamon (dried figs, coconut, cinnamon, chia, almonds, sunflowers seeds, walnuts, pumpkin and sesames seeds and cashews). My favourite recipe to make is granola in a papaya boat with coconut milk. Then I drizzle tahini or almond butter all over it!
#17 Who is your favourite fashion designer or brand?
#18 If you could change one thing about women’s surfing, what would it be?
The QS needs to give the competitors more prize money so we don’t have to have 2 jobs at the same time. I don’t feel I can put 100% in to it because I have to work. It’s also hard to pay for training.
#19 What is one exercise that you really hate doing?
Rowing. I hate the rowing machine!
#20 Longboarders, love em or hate em?
Love em! I wish I could do half the shit they do! But I hate them if they are beginners and they can’t control their board.
