Essential oils for winter skincare
When packing for a winter season, I pay particular attention to what skincare products I take. Give it a few months of below freezing temps, bitterly cold winds and dehydrated skin, and I’m soon grateful I packed those few extra skincare items. 3 months into winter and I have aged 5 years.
When it comes to essential oils, I’m a bit of a rookie. I always carry lavender on the plane to help me sleep but other then put a few drops here and there, I don’t know how to get the most out of essential oils. I have never thought to included them in my winter skincare or mixing them with creams.
This year in Japan, with regular visits to the traditional bath houses named onsens, I made sure I packed my own little spa pack of products. The onsens give me a moment to look after my body, stretch, wash and slow down to pay my skin and muscles some well needed attention. It was also a great setting to test the RMO products on my dehydrated winter skin.
RMO products I tested:
- 2x carrier oils:
- RMO Better Butter
- Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 2x essential oils:
- Immune Strength essential oil blend
- Sports Pro essential oil blend
The carrier oil + essential oil is a great option for travellers who want to mix up scents and skincare benefits without carrying multiple bottles of product.
What is a carrier oil?
The whole carrier oil + essential oil was a new one for me. I hadn’t actually heard of a carrier oil. It is a safe way to dilute an essential oil to put on your skin, offering maximum absorption and maximises the effectiveness of the essential oil. I used both the body butter and the fractionated coconut oil alone, as well as mixing it with the two essential oils: Immune Strength or Sports Pro.
What I loved:
All natural ingredients that can be trusted:
Reducing chemicals in the products I use is an increasingly important element in my decision making and product purchases. Knowing that these products are 100% organic and natural was a key driver in wanting to try them out.
When putting a concentrated oil like an essential oil on your skin, it is important to know it is chemical and toxin free. The Rocky Mountain Oils have a S.A.A.F.E. Promise™ to guarantee that the essential oils are what they say they are: 100% pure, natural and authentic.
The fragrance of the blended essential oils:
I usually use singular rather then blended essential oils so it was quite a treat to have these new fragrances at my disposal. The Sports Pro was my favourite with its spicy medicinal undertones of Wintergreen, Peppermint, Nutmeg, Clove Bud, Thyme, Black Pepper, Oregano, Marjoram, & Helichrysum gymnocephalum. It felt great on my muscles after a long day splitboarding.
The rich, creamy body butter:
The body butter is this really rich, creamy, thick oil packed with vitamins (A, E and F), with an unusual grainy texture that took some getting used to. The body butter would take a while to soak in but when it did, my skin felt amazing for days afterwards. The moisture it provided was something that my winter skin really needed. It wasn’t sticky at all, just really dewy – a perfect drink for my dehydrated skin.
Having never mixed essential oils into a carrier oil before, I really enjoyed mixing up the different scents with my winter skincare. My mood and the way body felt could determine the scent: Immune Strength or Sports Pro.
Body butter absorption:
The body butter has this granular texture that is really fun to cream up in your hands but not that easy to apply. When rubbing it into your skin, it’s easy for the product to roller-ball in your palms, bonds together and drop onto the floor. It was a bit messy to apply and it took about 4+ minutes to soak in properly. The dewy film of oil left on you skin was amazing in the cold, dry air of winter but may feel greasy in hotter, humid climates. It was however PERFECT for my winter skin and the dry climate.
Overall impression of RMO essential oils
I take a lot of joy from knowing that the products I use are free from chemicals and unknown ingredients. After all, your skin is your body’s largest organ so you should be mindful of what you are adding direct to your blood stream.
The thick, granular texture of the body butter really didn’t put me off and I really enjoyed taking the time to massage the product into my skin. Maybe this was my slowed-down Japanese onsen brain, paying attention to the details or maybe the product gave me a new appreciations for looking after my skin. Either way, this product was a pleasure to use during the cold winter months and I highly recommend checking it out. The carrier oil + essential oil is a great option for travellers who want to mix up scents and skincare benefits without carrying multiple bottles of product.
