Elation Surfwear Review

For a young brand that is just starting out Elation Surfwear is way ahead of other Australian swimwear brands that focused on surfers. Highly functional, comfortable, and stylish while doing their bit to reduce the consumer’s impact on the environment, Elation Surfwear is a brand that has a very big and bright future ahead of them.

Out of a small town on Australia’s Central Coast, is another young surfer wanting to do things differently. By different, we mean better. By better, we mean designed to excel in all conditions with flair and elegance. Kellie, though early in her twenties with no formal design training, has created her brand Elation Surfwear with unique styles and cuts that are sure to be a staple in the swimwear collection of any stylish and knowing water woman.

Currently, there are 5 styles in the Elation Surfwear range, available in two nature-inspired prints: The Eagle Ray, Peony print (Oh My Gawddd, the prints!), and one blue shade called Zenith. Styles include a high scooped neck, long-sleeve crop top called the ‘Cropped Rashie’ that we test in this review. There is also a low-scooped-necked cropped bikini called ‘tie back triangle’ (pictured above), a longsleeve one piece with a gorgeous cut out back, a vest top, and a shoulder-tie low-back swimsuit (gorgeous). Your choice of bottoms? A high-waist, high-cut bum style that we will review here, or a low waist brief named ‘HI waist bottoms’.

Elation Surfwear is part of an increasing number of sustainable surf swimwear brands that are educating their customers and helping them have less of an impact on their purchases. All Elation Surfwear products are made from 86% recycled Nylon and 14% spandex. The recycled Nylon is made from reclaimed post-consumer waste, like fishing nets and plastic bottles. By providing demand and market for these discarded items, brands like Elation are contributing to a new industry for waste, slowly helping to clean our oceans.

The ‘LAUNCH’ collection alone has rescued our oceans and landfills from 103kg of waste. 25kg of that was from ghost fishing nets!

Not stopping just there, Elation Surfwear has also implemented the following initiatives to their efforts to reduce their impact:

• Made from ECONYLl® and REPREVE® upcycled fabrics
• Balinese employees are paid 2.5 times more than the minimum wage and are provided with insurance for the individual and their family
• Use compostable mailing satchels and hygiene stickers, not plastic
• Prints are digitally printed using eco-certified dyes
• The product comes in a re-useable zip-able pouch, not plastic

Paired with a high-waisted pant or a long flowing skirt, the cropped rashie looks just as stylish for a night out as it does for a marquis surf session.

We tested the cropped rashie in size 12 and the high waisted bottoms in a size 10.

Things we loved:

The luxurious quality of the fabric

Luxurious is a word we don’t use too often describing swimwear made from recycled textiles but Elation Surfwear has this soft, premium feel of quality and luxury. The fabric will also protect you up to SPF 50. It felt great to swim in and wear at night.

The head-turning prints

We shared a picture of our good friend Britt surfing in the Eagle print top on Instagram and our community went wild! No surprises there, it’s the coolest print. Head-turning, bold, and inspired by one of the coolest ocean-dwelling rays there are! The other prints are within the same blue ocean tone which is a personal favourite of myself and other blonde and blue-eyed surfers.

I always keep a warm rashie top like this in my quiver for that exact reason: wind and reef protection!

The support offered by the double-lined fabric

The double lining provides significant support holding up your breasts meaning that an inner balconet or bra isn’t required (more on that below for women like me who have a cup size of E or more). We were able to do acro-yoga off the boom of a sailboat and our boobs didn’t move!

The support granted from both the tightness of the cut and the double-lined fabric feels warm, secure, and comfortable. Although in tropical climates, for long surf sessions in warm water, the double-lined fabric on the back was a bit on the warm side but it was PERFECT for Australian summer or when there was a bit of wind. I always keep a warm rashie top like this in my quiver for that exact reason: wind and reef protection!

I wore the Long Sleeve Cropped rashie a lot when sailing for the additional sun protection.

Sizing across the ribs + additional elastic band

The addition of an elastic band at the base of the top stops the top from riding up. It is not too thin that it cuts into your ribs or begins to roll up which is ideal. The sizing of the top is also perfect, providing the right level of tightness to not move in the surf or ride up above your breasts.

The scooped high neck

A high neck has many benefits, especially if you are surfing in the tropics. The area under your neck (decollege) is one of the first areas to show signs of aging so at some point in your surf trip, after repeated sunburn or simply running out of a decent surf sunscreen, you should be donning a long-sleeve rash vest or surf suit. Another benefit is that water won’t flush down your cleavage when you duck-dive, creating friction between you and the water and slowing your paddle to the peak and next wave. The XXX top is cut so well there is no baggy fabric that will scoop water on a duck-dive. It is both stylish and highly functional.

It looks just as good out of the water as in the water, Paired with a high-waisted pant or a long flowing skirt, the cropped rashie looks just as stylish for a night out as it does for a marquis surf session.

High-waist bottoms with just enough cheek

These were the first high-waist bottoms I have ever worn. With little to no space between the top of my hips and the bottom of my ribs, I practically have no waist. I have always been concerned that I would look like a British post box, short, stubby and absolutely zero hourglass shape to report. This wasn’t the case at all, helped by the high cut of the bum that accentuated my curves. The high waist also held my stomach rolls in, giving me more confidence.

A few additional things to note:

For women with large breasts:

You may wish that your crop top styles like this have an interior compartment to hold your breasts up. As I mentioned above, the top provided ample support and not once did the rashie rise up over my breasts in the surf. It was a pleasure to surf in!
