Imogen Caldwell by Morgan Maassen – A film as beautiful as her upbringing
Imogen Caldwell is a surfer from Red Bluff, Western Australia – One of the remotest places film-maker Morgan Maassen has ever traveled to. A hard-charging surfer well-practiced in heavy waves, this film follows Imogen on adventures from home in WA, to Iceland and across to Indonesia’s jungles.
Imogen Caldwell is a 23 year old woman, from a family of five who grew up in the remote desert of Red Bluff, Western Australia. Her upbringing was as rough, rugged and beautiful as the desert around her. A self-confessed tomboy, Imogen has also carved a name for herself as both a surfer (on the O’Neill’s global team) and also a fashion model. Her Instagram is a mix of hard-charging barrels in some of the heaviest Western Australian waves, mixed with fishing, simple beauty and high fashion. She is most at home in the ocean diving for food and keeping things plain, natural and simple. Married to a fisherman who also likes big waves, she still calls Western Australia home.
Film-maker Morgan Maassen has shot films with many an iconic female surfer, something he spoke to Still Stoked about at length in this exclusive interview – we highly recommend watching his film on Steph Gilmore called Vacation Island.
He first met Imogen Caldwell on a fashion shoot and watched in awe as this young teenager explored the rugged surf boat they were on with wide eyes and no expectation of comfort. She was all about the adventure and it was only to be a matter of time until their paths crossed again. The end product is this beautiful exploration into the unique and envious life and upbringing of Imogen Caldwell and the beautiful place she calls home. The travels to Iceland and Indonesia are just a bonus really!
