If you have been following the women’s world tour of surfing you will have noticed this year’s rookie Tatiana Weston-Webb. “Welcome to the feist fest”, said the Fiji Pro commentators on her opening round of competition. Her explosive, throw-caution-to-the-wind style of surfing is causing quite a stir. She has been firing… and everyone is talking about her.

“She is going to come in like a bull in a china shop. I wouldn’t be surprised if she cracks that top five.”

Tatiana Weston-Webb is a 20 year old, 5’7″, 127lbs sized pocket-rocket and from Kauai, Hawaii. An island that breeds the world’s finest surfers from the Irons brothers, Andy and Bruce, through to Bethany Hamilton and Malia Manuel on the women’s side. She first performed on the world stage in 2014 with three wild card performances. Most noticeably in The Fiji Pro where she charged a pumping Cloudbreak making it to round three before she lost to current world champ Stephanie Gilmore but not before turning a few heads with her explosive and gutsy surfing.

“I am really excited to be competing on the CT. This is where it all starts for me. I don’t know my future, I am just more excited to be living my dream, and I am looking forward to how it’s all going to pan out. I feel like this is the beginning of my life.”

Her fearless and aggressive approach has kept the media talking into this year’s competition. She doesn’t look like the rookie on tour. In fact, she doesn’t look shaken by her competition at all. She is rattling the cages of the other girls with her explosive backhand (she is a goofy footer). Her manoeuvres in the critical part of the wave continue to land her huge scores from the judges. She seems to put her foot down on the accelerator when her opponents lift off a touch. When the competition jersey is on, she is hunting. It obviously runs in the family as her mum was a professional body boarder winning at Pipeline. With an incredible amount of aggression from such a young, small and sweet girl, she is one of the most exciting athletes to watch on tour. Welcome to the feist fest. She is sure to dish out some huge upsets this year and for years to come. Maybe as WSL commentator Ross Williams said, cracking that top 5!
