Am I good enough to surf in the Mentawais?
If you are just learning to surf, sadly this trip isn’t for you.
We have designed this trip especially for intermediate to advanced surfers who are either beginning to do manoeuvres, or are looking to perfect their skills in perfect waves with world-class coaching.
Our coaches ask that you are able to:
- Paddle well
- Duck-dive or roll efficiently (if on a longboard)
- Take off smoothly on shoulder to head-high waves
- Keep a calm mind
From there we can teach almost anything ☺
What are the waves like?
This trip is scheduled at the end of the peak season when the winds get lighter and the crowds thinner. With lighter winds, we are able to explore more locations, offering us a wider variety of waves outside of the busy marquis waves that the Mentawai are famous for.
Expect shoulder to head high perfect waves, progressing to overhead later in the trip. While we can’t say which exact waves we will be surfing as we do not know the swell and wind, some of past favourite spots include:
- Burger World – Long, clean, right-point break with playful walls
- Playgrounds Left – Long, peeling, easy left-hander
- Bintangs – Quality, punchy right-hander
- Pitstops – Clean, predictable, and seemingly endless right reef break
- Roxies – Perfectly peeling & very fun, right-hander
- Beng Bengs – Predictable left, breaking over a deep & forgiving reef
- Macaronis – Mechanical left-hander, described as one of the best waves in the World
- 4 Bobs – Clean fun, & forgiving right-hander
- Silabu Left – Fun, uncrowded & mellow left-hander
There may be days when we’re near more than 1 break and the group can choose which waves they would like to surf. We are lucky to have 2 additional tender boats included to help with getting guests to and from, different surfing options.
Are longboarders welcome?
Of course! As long as you are comfortable turtle-rolling your board and calm and confident surfing in shoulder to head-high waves, your style and grace on a longboard is very much welcome!
I Get Sea Sick - Is this a issue?
All the long distance travel on the boat is done overnight to maximise surfing daylight hours. The boat will always be moored in sheltered bays however there’s still the possibility of weather and swell aggravating your sea sickness.
Sea sickness can be effectively managed with non-drowsy medicine where many excellent natural options are readily available. We would recommend bringing some medication with you to manage your motion sickness if you think you will need it.
How to get to the Mentawais?
You need to fly to Padang, Sumatra, at this airport: Bandara International Minangkabau (PDG)
Internationally, you’ll want to get to Jakarta, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur first.
Airlines direct to Padang: Lion Air, Garuda, Air Asia
